Wallpaper roll estimator

Estimate rolls from wall width, roll size, trim allowance, and pattern repeat.

Rolls needed
3
Rounded up to whole rolls
Strips needed
8
Based on wall width ÷ roll width
Adjusted drop length
3.03 m
Includes trim and repeat matching
Estimated cost
$105
Rolls × price per roll
Pattern repeat can increase waste. Buy from the same batch where possible.

What this estimate does and does not do

This calculator is a purchasing estimate for standard vertical wallpaper drops. It is designed to prevent under-ordering by using a conservative pattern-repeat allowance. It does not replace the instructions on your wallpaper roll, and it does not fully model half-drop, offset-match, diagonal, mural, stairwell, or highly irregular installations. For expensive paper, unusual pattern matching, or a whole-room job, check the result against the manufacturer’s coverage guidance or a professional decorator’s estimate.

Formula used

The calculator uses a strip-based estimate rather than only dividing wall area by roll coverage. That is usually more realistic for wallpaper because each vertical drop must fit the wall height and align with the pattern repeat.

strips needed = ceil(wall width / roll width)
raw drop = wall height + trim allowance
adjusted drop = raw drop + pattern repeat
strips per roll = floor(roll length / adjusted drop)
rolls needed = ceil((strips needed / strips per roll) × waste factor)

If the pattern repeat is set to zero, the adjusted drop is simply the wall height plus trim allowance. Adding one repeat is a conservative rule of thumb used to avoid under-ordering when matching seams.

Worked example

For a 4 m wide wall, 2.4 m height, 0.52 m wide roll, 10 m roll length, and 0.53 m pattern repeat:

  • Strips needed: 8
  • Raw drop length: 2.5 m including trim
  • Adjusted drop length: 3.03 m after adding one full repeat
  • Strips per roll: 3
  • Rolls before waste: 2.67, rounded up with waste to 3 or more rolls depending on settings

Assumptions

  • This estimates one continuous wall or combined wall width.
  • Windows and doors are not subtracted because wallpaper often still needs full drops above, below, or around openings.
  • Buy from the same batch number where possible to avoid colour variation.
  • Complex rooms, half drops, stairwells, sloped ceilings, or large repeats need extra judgement.

Common mistakes

  • Using area coverage only and ignoring pattern repeat.
  • Forgetting top and bottom trimming allowance.
  • Buying too little extra for mistakes or damaged drops.
  • Mixing batch numbers across rolls.

Frequently asked questions

How does pattern repeat affect the number of wallpaper rolls?

Pattern repeat increases the effective length of each vertical drop because each strip may need to be cut longer so the design lines up at the seams. That usually reduces the number of full strips you can cut from each roll.

Should I subtract windows and doors from the wall width?

For a quick roll estimate, it is usually safer not to subtract openings unless they are very large. You may still need full drops above, below, or around openings, and the saved paper may not be reusable because of pattern matching.

How much extra wallpaper should I buy?

A common planning allowance is at least 5-15% extra, and more for large pattern repeats, half-drop patterns, stairwells, damaged drops, or complex rooms. Buying from the same batch number is important because colours can vary between batches.

Does this calculator handle half-drop wallpaper?

Not yet. It models straight pattern matching by rounding each drop up to the next repeat. Half-drop or offset patterns can create additional waste, so add a larger waste percentage or buy an extra roll for those designs.
