What this estimate does and does not do

This calculator estimates drywall material quantities for a rectangular room. It is not a code or assembly design tool. Fire-rated walls, garages, moisture-resistant rooms, ceilings, sound assemblies, blocking, stud spacing, screw schedules, and local regulations may change material type and fastening requirements.

Formula used

wall area = 2 × (length + width) × wall height
ceiling area = length × width, if included
net area = wall area + ceiling area - opening allowance
order area = net area × (1 + waste %)
sheets = ceil(order area / sheet area)
screws = ceil(sheets × screws per sheet × 1.10)

The calculator also estimates joint compound and tape using editable rules of thumb.

Worked example

For a 12 ft × 12 ft room, 8 ft walls, ceiling included, one door, two windows, 4×8 sheets, and 10% waste:

walls = 2 × (12 + 12) × 8 = 384 ft²
ceiling = 12 × 12 = 144 ft²
openings = 21 + 2 × 15 = 51 ft²
net = 477 ft²
order area = 477 × 1.10 = 524.7 ft²
sheets = ceil(524.7 / 32) = 17 sheets

  • Standard window allowance is 15 ft².
  • Sheet area is sheet width × sheet length.
  • Mud, tape, and screw estimates are rough material planning values.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate drywall sheets?

Calculate wall area from room perimeter times wall height, add ceiling area if needed, subtract standard openings, add waste, then divide by sheet area and round up.

How many screws do I need per drywall sheet?

A common rough estimate is about 32 screws for a 4×8 sheet on walls, with more for ceilings or closer fastening schedules. Always follow local code and manufacturer guidance.

How much joint compound do I need?

A rough planning rule is about 1 gallon per 100 square feet of drywall for a multi-coat finish, but texture, skill, seam count, and finish level change usage.

Should I subtract doors and windows?

The calculator subtracts standard areas for doors and windows. Some installers do not subtract small openings because offcuts may not be reusable.
